# How do I rehydrate over-dried buds?

> To rehydrate over-dried buds, seal them in a jar with a fresh, slightly moister bud for about a day, then check that the equilibrated jar reads 55–62% RH (water activity 0.55–0.62). This restores the feel, not the lost aroma: a cure never fixes a bad dry. GenetixBay doesn't recommend humidity packs, which rob terpenes, or fruit peel and lettuce, which add mould risk and off-flavours.

## Short answer

Seal over-dried buds in a jar with a fresh, slightly moister bud for about a day. Then leave the jar sealed for 12–24 hours and check it reads a stable 55–62% [RH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/relative-humidity.md) ([water activity](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/water-activity.md) 0.55–0.62). That brings back the feel, not the lost aroma: *a cure never fixes a bad dry* (*House position*). No [humidity packs](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/humidity-pack.md). The method is *Grower practice*.

## Why

Buds trade water with the air in a sealed jar. Once the jar has equilibrated, its RH divided by 100 equals the bud's water activity [1]. A moister bud gives some of its water to the dry ones until they meet in the middle.

The safe range is narrow. ASTM sets 0.55–0.65 aw for dried flower: below 0.55 it crumbles, and above 0.65 mould becomes a risk [1]. Bringing buds up slowly and checking them keeps them inside it.

Lost aroma stays lost. Volatile [monoterpenes](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/monoterpene.md) escape during drying and storage [3], and adding water doesn't put them back.

The standard does mention sachets. ASTM lists salt-based sachets as one way to bring under-range flower back up [2]. That is a storage convenience, not evidence that packs improve flower, and the house position is that they cost [terpenes](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/terpene.md).

## The numbers

| Jar reading after 12–24 h sealed | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Below 55% RH | Over-dried | Add a fresh bud for about a day |
| 55–62% RH | Target | Remove the added bud and cure on |
| Above 65% RH | Too wet [1] | Open the jar and air the buds |

## What to do

1. Put the dry buds in a jar about ¾ full with a calibrated hygrometer.
2. Add one fresh, slightly moister bud from the same harvest, or one from a jar reading higher.
3. Seal it for about 24 hours, then take the added bud out.
4. Leave the jar sealed another 12–24 hours and read it.
5. Repeat if it is still under 55%. Go slowly.
6. Next harvest, dry for 7–14 days at 55–62% RH and jar sooner.

## Common mistakes

- Humidity packs left in for weeks.
- [Fruit](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/achene.md) peel, lettuce or a damp paper towel left in the jar.
- Reading the hygrometer straight after opening the jar.
- Expecting the [hay smell](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hay-smell.md) to cure out.

## Follow-up questions

**Do humidity packs fix over-dried buds?** GenetixBay does not recommend humidity packs for over-dried buds. In the house view they are a marketing gimmick that robs terpenes, and the only data claiming a benefit comes from a pack maker's own test. Put a fresh, slightly moister bud in the jar for a day instead, then check the jar's RH after it has sat sealed for 12–24 hours.

**Does orange peel or lettuce rehydrate buds?** Orange peel or lettuce will add moisture to dry buds, but GenetixBay does not recommend them. They release water unevenly, can push the jar above water activity 0.65 where mould grows, and can taint the aroma. A fresh, slightly moister bud from the same harvest adds moisture with no foreign smell. Remove whatever you add after about a day.

**Can over-dried buds be saved?** Over-dried cannabis buds can be made pleasant to handle again, but their lost terpenes do not come back. Bring them up slowly to water activity 0.55–0.62 with a fresh bud in the jar, then cure as normal. Below aw 0.55 buds turn brittle and smell faint or like hay, and that hay note never truly comes out.
