# Are pH test drops accurate enough?

> pH test drops and strips are accurate enough for soil and rough water checks, but not for hydro or coco. Colour kits read in steps of roughly 0.5 pH unit and are hard to judge in coloured nutrient solution, while hydro's working band, 5.5-6.2, is only 0.7 wide. A calibrated digital meter reads to 0.1 or better. Use drops as a backup that catches a failing meter.

## Short answer

For soil and rough checks of [tap water](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/tap-water.md), yes. For hydro and [coco](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/coco-coir.md), no. Colour kits read in steps of about half a [pH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ph.md) unit and are hard to judge in coloured nutrient solution, while a hydro target band of 5.5–6.2 is only 0.7 wide. A calibrated digital meter reading to 0.1 or better is the tool for [soilless growing](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/soilless.md). *Grower practice.*

## Why

Drops and strips are dyes that change colour across a [pH range](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ph-scale.md). You match the colour to a chart by eye, so resolution is limited by the steps on the chart and by your lighting. Tinted nutrients and organic feeds muddy the match.

A glass-electrode meter measures a voltage that changes about 59 mV per pH unit at 25 °C and converts it to a number [2]. Properly calibrated, that resolves tenths and hundredths.

The catch is maintenance. A meter is only accurate after a [two-point calibration](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/two-point-calibration.md) with fresh buffers that bracket your readings, and when its probe is stored wet [1][3]. An uncalibrated pen can be wrong by more than a colour kit.

That makes drops a useful backup: if the meter and the drops disagree badly, calibrate the meter.

## The numbers

| | Drops or strips | Calibrated digital meter |
|---|---|---|
| Typical resolution | ~0.5 pH unit | 0.01–0.1 pH |
| Coloured nutrient solution | Hard to read | Unaffected |
| Upkeep | None; reagent expires | Buffers, storage solution, weekly calibration |
| Lifespan | Until reagent runs out | Probe ~1–2 years |
| Good enough for soil | Yes | Yes |
| Good enough for hydro, coco | No | Yes |

**Verdict:** soil growers can start with drops; hydro and coco growers need a calibrated meter, with drops kept as a cross-check.

## What to do

1. Soil: drops are fine for checking water and [runoff](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/runoff.md) trends.
2. Hydro or coco: buy a meter with [temperature compensation](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/atc.md).
3. Calibrate with pH 7 then [pH 4 buffer](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/calibration-solution.md), at least weekly.
4. Store the probe wet in storage solution or pH 4 buffer.
5. Cross-check the meter against drops monthly.

## Common mistakes

- Reading drops under a purple [LED](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/led.md).
- Trusting an uncalibrated pen over a fresh test kit.
- Storing the meter dry.
- Using expired reagent.

## Follow-up questions

**Are pH strips accurate for nutrient solution?** Most pH strips are not accurate enough for cannabis nutrient solution. Wide-range strips step in whole or half pH units, and the dyes in some nutrients and the tint of organic feeds make colours hard to match. For soil watering they give a usable ballpark. For hydro and coco, where a few tenths matter, use a calibrated meter.

**Why don't my pH drops match my meter?** pH drops and a meter disagree for two common reasons: the meter has drifted and needs calibrating, or the drops are being read against a coloured solution in poor light. Calibrate the meter with fresh pH 7 and pH 4 buffer and re-test. If the meter now reads both buffers correctly, trust it over the drops.

**What kind of pH meter should I buy?** Buy a pH meter with automatic temperature compensation, two-point calibration, a replaceable or well-supported glass probe, and a resolution of 0.01-0.1 pH. Budget for fresh pH 7 and pH 4 buffer and storage solution, because a cheap meter calibrated weekly beats an expensive one never calibrated. Expect to replace the probe every one to two years.
